Completed in Apparent Incompletion. The ScCompleted in Apparent Incompletion. The Sculpture Art of Wojciech Seczawa [Skonczone w pozornym nieskonczeniu. Rzezby Wojciecha Seczawy]

In this publication, word and image constitute two integral parts of the description of the creative process, striving to convey to the reader as precisely as possible the emotions accompanying encounters with Professor Sęczawa’s art. In addition to photographs, this album was created thanks to records of several conversations conducted with the Professor, during which the artist and lecturer shared  impressions, inspirations, and perspectives on art. The cited fragments also come from a collection of unique, previously unpublished exhibition catalogues, the artist’s self-referential texts, and reviews of his oeuvre, which themselves form a rich source of knowledge in the field of sculptural art analysis.

The title of this publication was inspired by a passage from a review by Professor Teresa Klaman. This poetic statement refers to the status of Professor Sęczawa’s works, which, although photographed in their current form or displayed at exhibitions, may still undergo further transformations and reconfigurations. As the artist emphasizes, the creative process does not end as long as the sculpture lives with him and remains accessible. Living among his works generates a desire to make corrections, to reevaluate his perspective, and to restart the process anew under the influence of accumulated experiences. Professor Sęczawa’s drive to experiment with seemingly completed projects often makes it impossible to precisely determine the date of a work’s completion—many pieces remain suspended in an apparent state of incompletion for years.

Japanese cyberpunk. From Avant-garde Transgressions to Popular Cinema

Cyberpunk, as a subgenre of science fiction, emerged in the West in the 1980s. Although it significantly influenced the rise of a corresponding current in Japan, it is not its sole source, due to numerous cultural and linguistic barriers. Japanese cyberpunk, drawing equally from Western literary and cinematic works as from native folklore, novels, manga, avant-garde theatre, and the aesthetics of ero guro nansensu, ultimately produced a new quality entirely distinct from its Western counterpart. The differences are evident both in content and recurring motifs, as well as in form, since many of the most outstanding works of Japanese cyberpunk are animations—which in turn went on to inspire Western post-cyberpunk creators.

This publication presents the history of Japanese cyberpunk, outlining the possible sources of inspiration for its creators, the profiles of its most important directors along with their flagship works, and the directions of the genre’s development in both the West and Japan.
